By LYNN LOVENOLEWICZThe Associated Press – MIAMI (AP) President Donald Trump said Saturday he has “zero tolerance” for racist remarks.
Speaking in Florida, Trump called on lawmakers to pass laws to enforce existing laws.
He also blasted a Florida woman who was allegedly assaulted by two white men during a rally last year.
A protester who was injured during a Trump rally in Jacksonville, Florida, in August said she was punched in the face and knocked to the ground by a protester, who also shouted racial slurs.
She told The Associated Press she was assaulted while standing next to her fiancee, who is black.
She said the two men were white and the victim was Hispanic.
They ran away and her fiance, who was black, confronted them and told them to leave.
He said he then punched the man in the nose, knocking him to the floor, the victim said.
The woman, who asked that her name not be used, said she has no idea who the man was and was unsure if the incident was racially motivated.
She said she did not think it was a hate crime.
“It’s a shame because I have so many supporters, I have a lot of support, I love this country, but this has got to stop,” Trump said.
“I want to see you prosecuted, and if it was racially, it was so bad it’s just unbelievable.”
Trump did not say what he meant by “zero.”
He did say that it was his intention to prosecute the two individuals involved.
Trump said Saturday that he had already apologized to the woman.
“What I did was wrong, and I said it very strongly,” Trump told reporters after arriving at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida.
“And I am going to have zero tolerance for racism.”
Trump also said he wanted to give an interview to Fox News.
He is scheduled to appear Saturday on “Fox and Friends” and will hold a rally later in the day at the Florida State Fairgrounds.
The president’s campaign also called on the legislature to pass new laws to combat racial disparities in the criminal justice system.
Trump called for more than $6 billion to combat the epidemic of violence against black men and women and called for the federal government to take in more police officers.
Trump, who has been criticized for a series of racially charged comments, has called for a federal investigation into the violence.
