The House of Representatives impeached President Donald Trump on Tuesday for obstructing justice.
A two-thirds majority of both chambers passed the resolution to remove him from office by a vote of 217 to 179.
The move came amid a week-long investigation into whether Trump obstructed justice during his tenure as president, as well as other allegations of wrongdoing.
Trump, who is currently being investigated by special counsel Robert Mueller, is being held in a federal jail in Washington, D.C., on charges of obstruction of justice and making false statements in the investigation.
The House voted 219 to 158 to impeach Trump.
The Senate is expected to vote on the impeachment resolution Thursday.
The resolution calls for Trump to be removed from office on the grounds of “treason, bribery, and other high crimes and misdemeanors.”
